It is no wonder, then, that one in three adults, and one in five kids, is clinically obese. We ingest 8,500 milligrams of salt a day, double the recommended amount, and almost none of that comes from the shakers on our table. Every year, the average American eats thirty-three pounds of cheese (triple what we ate in 1970) and seventy pounds of sugar (about twenty-two teaspoons a day). Since that day, with the industry in pursuit of its win-at-all-costs strategy, the situation has only grown more dire. And by the time he sat down, the meeting was over. When he was done, the most powerful person in the room, the CEO of General Mills, stood up to speak, clearly annoyed. To deny the problem, he said, is to court disaster. This executive then launched into a damning PowerPoint presentation, 114 slides in all, making the case that processed food companies could not afford to sit by, idle, as children grew sick and class-action lawyers lurked. Increasingly, the salt, sugar, and fat laden foods these companies produced were being linked to obesity, and a concerned Kraft executive took the stage to issue a warning: There would be a day of reckoning unless changes were made. On the agenda: the emerging epidemic of obesity, and what to do about it. In the spring of 1999 the heads of the world's largest processed food companies, from Coca-Cola to Nabisco, gathered at Pillsbury headquarters in Minneapolis for a secret meeting. ![]() ![]() ![]() Another uses the voice of a female spirit. One tells the story of the Garden of Eden from the snake’s point of view. Some of the early texts were quite bizarre. “The Secret Book of John” claims that Adam and Eve received their divine spirit from a true God while the Old testament God hid the truth from mankind. The “Second Discourse of the Great Seth” declares that the true Christ was never crucified. Others were carefully scrutinized by Christian scholars and rejected for one reason or another, in many cases because the doctrines they promoted were regarded as threatening or heretical. They include “The Gospel of Peter”, “Origins of the World”, “Gospel of Mary (Magdalene)”, “Acts of John”, “Homilies of Truth” and “The Gospel of Truth”. There were dozens, probably hundreds, of religious texts circulating around at the time the Gospels were written and coming into common usage in the early centuries after the death of Christ. ![]() ![]() Satellite view of Nag Hammadi, source of the Nag Hammadi texts ![]() ![]() The major reason for the film's success, however, rests with lead actor Sam Riley who eerily recreates Curtis in appearance and voice. The simple fact is, there’s not a lot of original source material, for two reasons: first, in the medieval period, same-sex activity was seen as a behavior, not an expression of identity. I did quite a bit of reading and research-a lot of which is reflected in the “Queer History of England” text feature that’s included in each issue of Merry Men. There was some discussion, based on a few papers by a few academics, that possibly the origins of the Robin Hood story were rooted in sexual outlawry - that the historical figures who inspired the legend of Robin and his merry men, were people who were ejected from society and forced to live in nature because of their homosexual practices. ![]() ![]() The Second or Inner Order, the Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis, taught magic, including scrying, astral travel, and alchemy.
